What causes impotence?
In the majority of cases, impotence has a physical rather than psychological cause. Potential causes of impotence include:
- Medications (i.e. atenolol, cimetidine, digoxin, antidepressants, propranolol, lithium, carbamazepine, methadone, phentoin, thiazides etc.)
- Problems with the arteries or veins that supply blood to the penis
- Diabetes (vascular and nerve complications from diabetes)
- Endocrine disorders, decreased testosterone levels, high prolactin levels
- Psychological issues (relationship difficulties, perfectionism, insecurity, learned response not to feel emotions)
- Lesions in the nervous system
- Medical Illness, depression, prostatitis
- Physical Trauma
- Smoking or high alcohol consumption
- Elevated Cholesterol
