What causes impotence?

In the majority of cases, impotence has a physical rather than psychological cause. Potential causes of impotence include:
  • Medications (i.e. atenolol, cimetidine, digoxin, antidepressants, propranolol, lithium, carbamazepine, methadone, phentoin, thiazides etc.)
  • Problems with the arteries or veins that supply blood to the penis
  • Diabetes (vascular and nerve complications from diabetes)
  • Endocrine disorders, decreased testosterone levels, high prolactin levels
  • Psychological issues (relationship difficulties, perfectionism, insecurity, learned response not to feel emotions)
  • Lesions in the nervous system
  • Medical Illness, depression, prostatitis
  • Physical Trauma
  • Smoking or high alcohol consumption
  • Elevated Cholesterol
